Road rules and access conditions may change. Check official local sources, road conditions and your rental terms before travel.

Understanding ZTL

Many Italian historic centres use limited-traffic zones (ZTL). Entry permission is not automatic for rental cars and camera enforcement is common. Study the signage, check city-specific rules and ask your hotel about legal access without assuming an exemption.

Motorway tolls

Many Italian autostrade charge tolls based on your journey. Choose a lane matching an accepted payment method and keep your entry ticket when the system issues one. Confirm any electronic toll-device rules with your rental supplier.

Driving the scenic routes

Mountain passes and coastal roads can be slow and narrow. Plan reasonable daily distances and check for seasonal closures or local access restrictions. Busy coastal destinations may be easier with a small car.

Rental terms

Review the deposit, deductible, extra-driver rules and cross-border permissions. Inspect the car and document existing damage before leaving the rental location.
