Road rules and access conditions may change. Check official local sources, road conditions and your rental terms before travel.

Start with the weather and road conditions

Weather can change quickly, even over short driving distances. Check the Icelandic Met Office forecast and road conditions before setting off and again at stops. Strong wind, snow, ice and poor visibility can change plans. Build spare time into the itinerary rather than attempting long drives to a fixed schedule.

Road access and highland F-roads

The highlands and F-roads have special restrictions and open only when conditions permit. A suitable vehicle and rental agreement are essential, but four-wheel drive does not make all crossings safe. Never drive off-road. Check the current road-status and restrictions before choosing an itinerary.

Emergency planning and insurance

Save 112 for emergencies. Read the rental agreement carefully, including gravel, wind, water and undercarriage exclusions. Avoid driving into floodwater. For travel alerts, consult SafeTravel and submit a travel plan when appropriate.

Choosing a rental car

For ordinary paved roads in reasonable conditions, vehicle size and luggage room may matter more than 4x4 branding. Winter trips and remote routes may need a different vehicle. Only rely on an AWD or 4x4 designation when explicitly confirmed by the rental company.
