Road rules and access conditions may change. Check official local sources, road conditions and your rental terms before travel.

Know the toll system

Portugal uses a mix of toll plazas and electronic-only toll roads. Ask your supplier how their electronic payment device or toll programme works, including fees and post-rental charges.

Lisbon and Porto

Historic streets can be steep and narrow. Plan parking away from congested centres and check the vehicle access rules for your destination. Small cars are often easier to manoeuvre in older districts.

Algarve and coastal driving

Popular summer areas can be busy. Allow extra time for airport pickups and coastal roads. Avoid stopping in unsafe roadside areas just for a photograph.

Before your trip

Confirm rental cross-border terms, fuel policy and any additional driver charges in your contract rather than relying on a general comparison page.
